Partners and Collaborations
How We Work
A small team works at the centre of Cape Farewell's ambitious programme of activity. Our work is not possible without the support of our staff, board of trustees, partner organisations and individuals and our funders. The expertise of many feeds into and across our programmes. Click for more on how we work as an organisation or read on for information on the individuals and organisations we work with as part of our arts programme.
Artists
We are an artist-led organisation, founded and directed by artist David Buckland. Since the project began, we have invited artists to join the expeditions to the Arctic and to work with us on our ongoing programme of exhibitions and events. We have never asked those who have joined the journey to sign a contract for services, instead the hope is that they are somehow inspired by the environment to engage with the issue of climate change. Every artist that has so far journeyed with Cape Farewell has been inspired to create work.
We work with an eclectic group of artists, diverse in experience and practice. We work with cultural organisations and arts consultants to identify and select potential voyagers. Invitations to join a voyage are then always made personally.
For the 2008 expedition we worked in partnership with the Royal Court Theatre, Crafts Council, Eden Project, Southbank Centre and RSA Art & Ecology team in the selection of the voyagers and also in the development of the ongoing programme of activity before, during and after the expeditions.
We offer a unique route for artist development. Each of the artists Cape Farewell engages has the potential to add to the evolution of a new creative and cultural language, communicating to new audiences the climate challenge. Explore the artist pages on the website to find out more about the artists we have worked with.
Art Programme Collaborations
Throughout our art programme, Cape Farewell works with a number of key individuals, collaborators and partners to build the exhibition, events, film and media activities. Arts Advisor Greg Hilty from agency plusequals and Sam Collins, Production Manager have been central to helping us develop our arts programme.
A few key organisations we have worked with include The Natural History Museum, who co-curated our first major exhibition, The Barbican Art Gallery who now work to tour this exhibition internationally and Arts Council England who are our major arts funder.
In 2007, Cape Farewell were invited by Southbank Centre's artistic director Jude Kelly to be artists in residence for three years. During its residency, Cape Farewell will operate as an eco-hub at the centre of Southbank's sustainability agenda, bringing artwork, cultural events and activities to the centre in order to raise awareness and encourage an urgent response to the climate change challenge.
In Winter 2007, Cape Farewell also began a long-term partnership with the Eden Project in Cornwall. Here, we work with the project's creative team to influence the way sustainability and climate change is represented on site.
Other arts programme partners include Tate, RSA's Art & Ecology programme, Crafts Council and the Royal Court Theatre.
