Chris Wainwright

Artist, curator, professor and former Pro Vice-Chancellor of the University of the Arts London

Chris Wainwright (1955–2017) was an artist, former Chair of Cape Farewell’s Board of Trustees and a veteran of the Cape Farewell project. He joined Cape Farewell’s 2008 Disko Bay expedition and his work featured in several Cape Farewell books and films. He co-curated Cape Farewell’s major international touring exhibition Unfold and the related book profiling the work of 23 international artists addressing issues of climate change. He also collaborated on many Cape Farewell events including Shift at London’s Southbank Centre.

Chris Wainwright was an artist and curator working primarily in photography video and performance. Key exhibitions include: Futureland Now at the Laing Art Gallery, Newcastle, UK: Between Time and Space, Heijo Palace, Nara, Japan: The Moons of Higashiyama, Kodai-ji Temple, Kyoto, Japan: Between Land and Sea, Box 38 Ostende, Belgium: Trauma, Culturcentrum, Brugge, Belgium; and A Catalogue of Errors at the Diawa Foundation, London, UK.

Chris Wainwright’s photographic work is held in many major collections including the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, UK; The Arts Council of England, UK; Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris, France: the Polaroid Corporation, Boston, USA: Unilever, London, UK, The Today Museum, Beijing, China; as well as in numerous private collections.

He was Professor and Pro Vice-Chancellor of the University of the Arts London and Head of Camberwell, Chelsea and Wimbledon Colleges. He was also a member of The Tate Britain Council; a member of the Board of Directors of the Today Art Museum, Beijing; an advisor to Future Lab Tohoku, Japan; and Artistic Director of the environmental network What Has To Be Done.
