Sophie Calle
French writer, photographer, installation artist and conceptual artist
Sophie Calle is a French writer, photographer, installation artist, and conceptual artist. She joined Cape Farewell on the 2008 Disko Bay Expedition, visiting the spectacular Disko Bay area of West Greenland with over 40 international artists, journalists and scientists.
Following the voyage her work North Pole was shown in the Earth: Art of a changing world exhibition at the Royal Academy.
“Sophie Calle’s mother had three wishes before she died: to visit the ocean; to visit New York; and to visit the North Pole; none of which she achieved. After her mother’s death, Calle travelled to Greenland with the 2008 Cape Farewell expedition, taking her mother’s treasured diamond ring and pearl necklace with her. The commemorative act of burying her mother’s jewellery in a glacier, while contemplating the items’ future, is represented in this series of works.”
